Loyola, Lincoln, and Leadership: A Bicentennial Celebration

In celebration of the life and accomplishment of Abraham Lincoln, Loyola University Chicago is proud to announce that the award winning historian and best selling author of Team of Rivals, Doris Kearns Goodwin will be presenting a lecture entitled “Lincoln and Leadership” on the eve of Lincoln’s 200 birthday, February 11, 2009.  This event is seen as the centerpiece of Loyola’s year-long efforts to honor and commemorate the 16th President and Illinois own, Abraham Lincoln.   Also included in our schedule of events (Fall 2008, Spring 2009) will be a number of graduate and undergraduate courses on Lincoln and various aspects of the Civil War, Symposiums and public lectures by local and national scholars (e.g. Douglas L. Wilson, Knox College, Ron Green, Dartmouth College, William Lee Miller, University of Virginia), a museum quality photo exhibit on Lincoln and his times, a film festival, and a Law school debate on “Lincoln the Lawyer and the Law.”
This year-long intellectual celebration will be open to Loyola students, alumni. faculty, staff, and the broader Chicago community.  We believe that there is a direct correlation between Lincoln’s legacy and Loyola’s heritage, tradition, and commitment regarding education and leadership—Learn Broadly, Serve Generously, Lead Courageously.  In celebrating Lincoln we are celebrating both our past and our future as a people, as a state, and as a University.
