Abraham Lincoln Triathlon Series Receives Endorsement from the Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission

Organizers of the Abraham Lincoln Triathlon Series announced today that the series has been named an officially “endorsed” event by The Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

By obtaining the “endorsed” status, the triathlon series will be included among premier events celebrating the life of Abraham Lincoln as the Lincoln Bicentennial approaches in 2009.

The events scheduled for April 19 and August 23 will offer swims, bike rides and runs of varying difficulty and distance for both new and seasoned triathletes.

The April event consists of Abe’s Mini-triathlon and includes an indoor 100 yard swim at PORTA High School pool, a 2.5 mile rural bike ride and a 1 mile run.  Also that day is the Pioneer Sprint triathlon that includes a 300 yard indoor swim, 13 mile rural bike ride and a 3.2 mile run through picturesque Petersburg.

The August event offers the Stovepipe Sprint which includes a 600 yard private lake swim, a 18 mile rolling prairie bike ride and a 4.4 mile run through Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site’s 1800 pioneer village.

In addition, the Railsplitter Intermediate distance triathlon offers a 1 mile swim in a private lake, a 36 mile bike ride through Jim Edgar Panther Creek state park and a 7 mile run through Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site’s 1800 pioneer village.

By participating in these events racers will not only race in the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln, they can become part of the bicentennial celebration and the Lincoln legacy.

Did you know that in 1831 young Abraham became the nation’s first multisport athlete when he accepted the challenge to run, wrestle and fight an opponent?

Come join the celebration and help continue the evolution of multisport while becoming a part of the Lincoln legacy.
